Raising awareness of sexual assault referral centres (SARCs)

The NHS is highlighting sexual assault referral centres (SARCs) – specialist services that provide care and support to anyone who has been raped or sexually assaulted at any point in their life.

SARCs are available 24/7 for appointments across England. Despite this, many survivors of sexual assault do not know where to turn for help. This campaign aims to raise awareness of the vital support SARCs offer and guide people to the appropriate services.

SARCs provide a range of specialist care, including:

  • Immediate emotional support

  • Testing and assessment for STIs and HIV

  • Referrals to sexual health, mental health, and sexual violence services

  • DNA examinations and emergency contraception for recent assaults

When a person visits a SARC, the team listens and provides care in a safe and supportive environment. They explain the available options without pressuring the individual to take any particular action. Assistance is available from a SARC even without involving the police or reporting the assault.

SARCs offer more than medical care – they provide support when it is needed most.

Anyone who has experienced rape or sexual assault and is unsure where to turn can search for ‘SARCs’ or visit nhs.uk/SARCs to find their nearest service.
